This was shaping up to be our last year staying at the farm, and I really wanted to be able to ride around all the fields and trails one last time.<br />
<br />
I knew that I didn't want to spend the money to board three horses beginning this December, so purchasing a third was out of the question. That left me with leasing. I sat down and wrote up a list of criteria I was looking for in a horse, and those issues that would disqualify him/her from being considered. Once I had everything hammered down I wrote up the following ad:<br />
<br />
<i>What I'm looking for:<br /><br />Off site lease - at my farm. I'm ONLY interested in an off site lease. I'm sure your place is great. So is mine, and that's where I'd like to ride :) Seasonal lease through end of October or am willing to look at a shorter term lease.<br /><br />Experienced trail horse that's been there and done that.<br /><br />Road and traffic safe.<br /><br />Fully trained - w/t/c or gait on cue<br /><br />Must ride safely alone. I very rarely have a chance to ride with others.<br /><br />An older horse is no problem.<br /><br />Loads and Hauls easily enough that one person can handle it.<br /><br />I'm looking for a horse that's the same whether I'm able to ride once a week or twice a month, my work schedule can get the better of me occasionally.<br /><br />The horse needs to be capable of carrying an adult rider - 5'8 and 200lbs.<br /><br />What I don't want:<br />A horse that will be great with more work/training/riding.<br />A horse that requires an experienced rider and/or consistent riding.<br />A horse who is hot, flighty, spooky, or otherwise a pita. If his barn name is Loco, I probably don't want to ride him!<br />No rearing, bucking, biting, or kicking.<br />No age or soundness issues that requires pricey supplements (unless you're going to provide them), rehabilitation, or have riding restrictions placed on the horse.<br /><br />Me:<br /><br />I'm an experienced adult rider. I currently own two horses, one is 31 and retired and the other is on long term rehabilitation for an injury. I'd really love to be able to ride this spring/summer/fall, so I'm looking for a lease. I am a capable rider, but I am content to cruise along and enjoy the scenery, and have no desire to race madly about.<br /><br />Your horse will have his own 2 acre grass pasture with a run in shed.<br /><br />I am willing to pay a reasonable price for the lease depending on what you will provide; or we can work out a free lease situation where I would cover the daily care of the horse as well as routine farrier work.</i><br />
<br />
I thought it was pretty well done if I do say so myself. Maybe not the friendliest ad out there, but I was hoping that horse owners would read it fully to see if their horse would be a good fit before responding. I surely didn't want to waste anyone's time; including my own.<br />
<br />
I posted this on Craigslist, Dream Horse, Equine.com, and other sites I hoped would attract some interested parties. I had some interest all right! Boy. There are a lot of horse owners out there with ill mannered, young, untrained, and slightly dangerous horses that would love to pass them along so that I could trail ride the horse for them. I did also meet some lovely horse owners, and it was a pleasure to meet their "herds". I looked at quite a few, the majority of which I didn't even get on. Some because they were <u>clearly</u> not as described, and some because I knew my tack just would not fit them. As much as the tack ho in me protested, I just could not justify buying a saddle to fit a lease horse.<br />
<br />
I finally had success on the Dayton Horse Owners group on Facebook. I was linked up with a lovely horse owner with a couple of extra horses. I went out to look at Pretty Boy and Echo, then Renee was kind enough to haul Echo to a local trail so that I could get first hand experience on how she reacted to real life obstacles.<br />
<br />
We had a lovely time and we set up a date and time for me to come and sign the lease papers and take her home.<br />

<br />JenLShttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10912831710402499919noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-173378090830565519.post-26286011647454809042012-07-23T14:04:00.000-07:002012-07-23T14:04:19.083-07:00April Showers bring May flowers, and what do May flowers bring? Infection.The entire month of May was an ongoing round of infection in Tommy's hoof. Normally I can get in front of it with an aggressive treatment plan, but this time it was just about impossible. We went through round after round of CleanTrax, partial/straight bleach soaks, and packing with antibiotics. Nothing was working though. Every day I'd take the wrap off and we'd still have smelly drainage. We tried leaving the wrap off to see if that would dry it up this time, but that didn't work either.<br />
<br />
Finally we started a new antibiotic called Tucoprim, and that cleared it up. Temporarily.<br />
<br />
The only piece of good news is that I can tell a difference with the Pergoglyde. It doesn't do anything for his hoof or ringbone, but he is not sweating excessively and covered with salt crystals the way he was in last summer's heat. It's a good thing too, because this summer has been a killer!JenLShttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10912831710402499919noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-173378090830565519.post-12718151530359723632012-06-16T06:12:00.001-07:002012-06-16T06:12:12.693-07:00Beach Trail Ride Bachelorette PartyThe best bachelorette party I've ever been to!<br />

The horses were provided by <a href="http://www.twobitstable.com/" target="_blank">Two Bit Stable</a> at Cape San Blas. They were all very nice horses, and took us on a lovely ride along the beach. It was overcast and threatening to storm, but we were all happy. My horse liked to meander a bit slower...<br />

I attributed it to a combination of being freshly barefoot for the first time in months and walking across the gravel barnyard to get to the pasture.<br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
It turns out I was W - R - O - N - G</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Within 24 hours there was a ridge developing on the outside of his hoof; and I don't mean a delicate little wavy line. Over the next few days it grew larger and continued further around the side of his hoof towards the front. It also began on the inside of the hoof so that it was working from both sides forward, although that side did not start developing until the third day. He was also very obviously unsound. He didn't even want to go up for grass, instead preferring to stay in the small, flat area at the base of the hill.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Mark was out of town on a working vacation, so I called Dr. A's office to see what their opinion was. At the very least I wanted to get some Bute to make him a little more comfortable. When I explained what Tom was doing and what I was seeing they suggested I come in for new x-rays to make sure there wasn't rotation in the hoof. That was scary to think about, but we made an appointment for the following Monday.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Here are some pictures of the hoof on March 26th, the day of the vet appointment. They are cell phone pictures, so aren't the best quality, and the only thing that you can really see is that there is a ridge developing. I wish I'd thought to put my finger underneath the edge of the ridge so that you could see how far out it had developed, making the hoof look (to me) like it was buckling to the outside from the pressure. But I didn't. So instead you get these crappy third rate photos that make it look like I'm blowing things wayyyy out of proportion.</div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
I admit that I was a wee bit nervous taking Tommy in for his appointment. At that time exactly one week had passed (Monday 19th - Monday 26th) and there had been dramatic changes in the hoof, as well as in Tommy's overall soundness. He was still very lame if he was off the Bute, and didn't have much of an appetite.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
The good news is that the x-rays showed no navicular changes or rotation within the hoof, the canker site was still clear; and it turns out that I really was blowing things out of proportion and there was nothing wrong with the hoof developing a ridge. Now Tommy would disagree with that since he's the one that's lame on it, but Murphy's Law reared up and bit me in the ass and Tommy walked into the office pretty well sound. So I did appear to be THAT paranoid horse owner, the kind that makes mountains out of molehills. We all know one. Apparently I am one - ;)</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div>
The bad news is that Dr. A used the x-rays to measure and Tommy only has .33" between the bone in the hoof and the ground outside. That's less than the sole on my flip-flops, and we all know how easily we can feel each and every rock in flip-flops. The rest of the bad news is that even though the canker is still gone, the hole in the hoof is still open to soft tissue. There is just no real healing going on to close it up, and that's been with a year of <a href="http://horsetech.com/glanzen-gl.html" target="_blank">Glanzen GL</a> which is the most power-packed hoof supplement I could find. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Unfortunately we had to have a talk about euthanasia for Tommy. We seem to be running out of options and nothing's really working out. We're not to that point just yet, but it seems to be looming on the horizon. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
So we headed back home with some Pergoglyde, and hopeful hearts that it will jump start his immune system or whatever it is that's out of whack, and that hole in his hoof will heal up. </div>

<br />
Tom's last shoe finally came off on March 19th. We'd been maintaining a one shoe off, one shoe on dynamic in order to accommodate a single EasyBoot RX. Since my last one was finally overcome by the rigors of staying on a 2,000lb draft horse (see our previous post for the video!), Tom was going barefoot. I'd ordered a pair of the regular Easy Boots in the largest size they made so that his hoof would still be protected from the great outdoors.<br />
<br />
The hoof had grown out enough since this began (again!) in September that the hole appeared to be growing out well. After the trim it was not as deep as it had been.<br />
<br />
<br />
<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">
Afterwards, as we headed back to the field, Tom was only a bit ouchy. Since we had to traverse the gravel of the barn yard that was easily explained away as nothing serious.</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">
I bet I know what you're thinking...."Famous last words"</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">
And you'd be right.</div>

The temps were in the 70s for almost 2 weeks, the grass has come on strong, and the Tommy is feeling his oats!<div>

I'd like to say that we've had new and exciting experiences, but basically it went like this:<br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
1. Farrier pulled shoe and found serious thrush<br />
<br /></div>
<div>
2. Cleantrax, cleantrax, cleantrax<br />
<br /></div>
<div>
3. Tommy went to vet to see if canker was cleared up.<br />
<br /></div>
<div>
4. Vet found infection in multiple areas of the hoof and opened them up.<br />
<br /></div>
<div>
5. Cleantrax, cleantrax, straight bleach soak and more antibiotics for the canker area<br />
<br /></div>
<div>
6. Switched to collodial silver to treat areas. Went through a bottle, then went back to the thrushbuster.<br />
Infection seems to be cleared up, move to every other day thrush treatments.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
7. My super sniffer thinks it smells infection. Farrier comes back out, cuts a little back, and looks like it's clear. We move to twice a week thrush treatments.<br />
<br /></div>
<div>
8. I take off the wrap one day to find gray ooze. Booo thrush.<br />
<br /></div>
<div>
9. Back to the thrush medication.<br />
<br /></div>
<div>
10. Weapon's farrier comes out for his trim and is nice enough to cut back the frog a bit more so I can get to it. That was a week and a half ago, and we still have the gray ooze. Its time to start some clean trax again.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
In addition, the boys left the door open to the scales and Annie (the red one)</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />

<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
got inside and got ahold of one of the EasyBoot RX's.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjRKOQCrpcghDZdPwlG1rM5Vg3MrbokI8ZT_Di0TVEFvesmVIPTMgBd9rPIUFEUNHBDq0DTKPvnZrCpGXRWJyL68NVrtqf9WwJWkS4K961VRI6ickXphw4j21vBQxrUDUS8ZtRPBzX1vn3f/s1600/100_7265.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjRKOQCrpcghDZdPwlG1rM5Vg3MrbokI8ZT_Di0TVEFvesmVIPTMgBd9rPIUFEUNHBDq0DTKPvnZrCpGXRWJyL68NVrtqf9WwJWkS4K961VRI6ickXphw4j21vBQxrUDUS8ZtRPBzX1vn3f/s320/100_7265.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Until that point I had a pair, and I rotated because the material gets damp from the heat of his hoof and was holding moisture in. So now we're down to one boot, and that one is ripping. I'm hoping to get a few more weeks out of it, but we'll have to see.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I want to see what EasyBoot's new Back country - how great would it be if it came in draft horse sizes??</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
In the meantime, I have one adorable, loving, goofy, and fun loving red heeler to rehome....any takers??</div>JenLShttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10912831710402499919noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-173378090830565519.post-24126983239095339362012-01-16T16:36:00.000-08:002012-01-16T16:36:20.204-08:00Like Us on Facebook!Tommy's on Facebook!<br />

Somehow I'm not able to figure out how to add the Follow Us on Facebook button to this blog. I know it can be done. I've seen it on other people's websites, I just can't seem to do it. I'm going to blame it on Monday, and try again on a Friday. In the meantime you can just click the link above.<br />

I was nail biting nervous to see what it looked like underneath. I'm always biting my nails though so maybe that doesn't signify anything special. <br />
<br />
Mark arrived and we got to work. By "we" I mean Mark. I just held the horse and offered helpful commentary like "I think he's going to move," and "Oops, did the dog just lick you?" What can I say, Mark's lucky to have an owner like me looking out for him. I'm sure some farm dogs are mean, right? I mean, what's a little slobber between friends?? Annie's sure they are friends. She's a little goofy though.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
The shoe came off easily enough, and it appeared that the canker had not grown back. The bad news is the thrush came back strong. Guess the copper silicone and my Thrush Buster didn't do it's job. Or here's a scary thought...maybe it DID work and it's still this yucky.<br />

Lucky for us it was one of the last nice days we had before our winter weather hit so we went right into a Clean Trax soak.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi0ihn4trFB9xTrXKEna2y1bWieA5W3sk9gIDAUZuJfCyCjAc11UQ1f0SKOCIaPVdXjgcv0C6mP4aNOv7GpRw07dhTWx8GLh3ddL7zT1tMs7awiSV4ScvjWgJ5kJGprCystfYBpFhurKHDM/s1600/IMG_0243.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi0ihn4trFB9xTrXKEna2y1bWieA5W3sk9gIDAUZuJfCyCjAc11UQ1f0SKOCIaPVdXjgcv0C6mP4aNOv7GpRw07dhTWx8GLh3ddL7zT1tMs7awiSV4ScvjWgJ5kJGprCystfYBpFhurKHDM/s320/IMG_0243.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
The hardest part is finding a bag big enough to go around and his hoof and strong enough to hold up to him standing on it that long. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhXBg7FOLF8DujC5xK90osr1a1N7lo913DJCQxr8qcddLIGNLM23WtomWISN2U-0IGMd274f6JShNpL6n1fqQ1D5MztCSrIwqlwe6-GDyOG3cm3q7RWShlLjmltcl4geE9V7nsFro1NPfAm/s1600/IMG_0248.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhXBg7FOLF8DujC5xK90osr1a1N7lo913DJCQxr8qcddLIGNLM23WtomWISN2U-0IGMd274f6JShNpL6n1fqQ1D5MztCSrIwqlwe6-GDyOG3cm3q7RWShlLjmltcl4geE9V7nsFro1NPfAm/s320/IMG_0248.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
I love Clean Trax. It makes the hooves look so nice and clean and pretty when it's done. One day I will do a Clean Trax soak on all four hooves and take before and after pictures so you can see just how nice it looks. I think I need to wait till the $10 Congress sale first though!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjAl1jCQJGuvzUI8VQBHTkoM_2Ac_fQlUMKRQwTg1hG-MGrwuY_3t3-sEUIIaKDXJohaO9ewS01p3N5mdHrfi4oInX8zN5WopZSyYSaOwaa2KbgEDw-XsI4IfKBSX-j98A3ohkOyoHfWT14/s1600/IMG_0249.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjAl1jCQJGuvzUI8VQBHTkoM_2Ac_fQlUMKRQwTg1hG-MGrwuY_3t3-sEUIIaKDXJohaO9ewS01p3N5mdHrfi4oInX8zN5WopZSyYSaOwaa2KbgEDw-XsI4IfKBSX-j98A3ohkOyoHfWT14/s320/IMG_0249.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
I changed thrush medications. I'd been squeezing some Thrush Buster under the silicone, but clearly it wasn't working very well, so I switched to Well Horse. This product you apply with a toothbrush. I squirted a bit in the hole and then scrubbed it all around.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi6C4MXpRvNDztI6-OfDrwzBxzitgDQ30CeMTOQXtAnzIYvPqSA3A-1DfyJr-XLoemhM4dPImpEE7KpZ8_ah8BFoI2k7zA1-6QV7qC0-VPwcfoCfMboNiBCumzTh9w3dXy4jtw04G_HtIR5/s1600/IMG_0252.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi6C4MXpRvNDztI6-OfDrwzBxzitgDQ30CeMTOQXtAnzIYvPqSA3A-1DfyJr-XLoemhM4dPImpEE7KpZ8_ah8BFoI2k7zA1-6QV7qC0-VPwcfoCfMboNiBCumzTh9w3dXy4jtw04G_HtIR5/s320/IMG_0252.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
Then I went a little crazy and applied it just about everywhere.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiy4ew32Rp7T1NDKHa1OQq1_DRaOG2GMLbn1Ndy53EYcfXwxhMG6bM3-c5GScxBNG441HGdXH_n3mncqc4P2PVzG90mugOZYqrkGoLQZAkBPEmxtHTlSZBZKO7EEl2ylDGkDSskUNDku0Co/s1600/IMG_0256.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiy4ew32Rp7T1NDKHa1OQq1_DRaOG2GMLbn1Ndy53EYcfXwxhMG6bM3-c5GScxBNG441HGdXH_n3mncqc4P2PVzG90mugOZYqrkGoLQZAkBPEmxtHTlSZBZKO7EEl2ylDGkDSskUNDku0Co/s320/IMG_0256.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Then I put on our handy EasyBoot RX, and everyone went out for a little turnout in the beautiful sunshine. Look - Weapon and I aren't even wearing our coats!</div>

<br />
It's been months since we've ridden, but he was just as well behaved as if he'd been ridden regularly all fall and winter. I knew he would be though, because we're both firm believers that there's no sense in being foolish; and there's always time to stop and have a nibble. Unlike Weapon, who spent the duration of our ride galloping the fence line. Tommy and I agree this is exceedingly foolish behavior, and we would *never* behave this way. Although it is interesting to watch...<br />

I headed out to the barn to feed and then the weather started rolling in. <br />
<br />
Hello storm clouds!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-3urp-PTyZaU/TwDhNkSERMI/AAAAAAAAAj4/2qRznl0UAAY/s1600/IMG-20120101-00404.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-3urp-PTyZaU/TwDhNkSERMI/AAAAAAAAAj4/2qRznl0UAAY/s320/IMG-20120101-00404.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
It didn't take very long for the wind to start howling. Luckily the rain held off until right when I was walking across the barnyard with the grain. It would have sucked if I'd missed a good drenching!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh1uCoLADI20qhVoA81M2nF17C3Hm4xRjlG0ncKzVI9TYyJYDzU1yLROGGpuLn3EopXNWU0tpZRSzLfeV44VVk39-DOVE-4JlZVuKiShvUmJy-pcfcSHkut7M4tABdo5SPgvPKXhP_9UjsW/s1600/IMG_0201.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh1uCoLADI20qhVoA81M2nF17C3Hm4xRjlG0ncKzVI9TYyJYDzU1yLROGGpuLn3EopXNWU0tpZRSzLfeV44VVk39-DOVE-4JlZVuKiShvUmJy-pcfcSHkut7M4tABdo5SPgvPKXhP_9UjsW/s320/IMG_0201.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
Then the wind started. I sounded like there was a semi truck coming up the lane. I went around the side of the house to look, but nope. Just the crazy wind.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi9y71WSaDMfTxdBi9fHC9_30oj2tN-xpmCv8OJqYnRETl4rp0l2-G1nbpccyqjVs3dlBGjLu7RpzV2utjqPw5eVHKtrb5AASkDMvnx-8ppRwHoxk8JANzjBzZlE9VfRZB9FsO1YIktctb8/s1600/IMG_0200.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi9y71WSaDMfTxdBi9fHC9_30oj2tN-xpmCv8OJqYnRETl4rp0l2-G1nbpccyqjVs3dlBGjLu7RpzV2utjqPw5eVHKtrb5AASkDMvnx-8ppRwHoxk8JANzjBzZlE9VfRZB9FsO1YIktctb8/s320/IMG_0200.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
The temperature has been dropping since then, and it looks like we'll be having some really yucky weather for next week. Just in time for Tommy's farrier appointment.<br />
<br />
It's been a slow couple of months. Too wet for Tommy to get much turn out, and definately too wet for any riding. I'm not complaining though, because I'd rather have 40s and rain than 20s and snow. I'd like to do one ride in the snow, then it can go straight back to being warm!<br />
<br />
I had grand plans of doing a Christmas photo of the horses in their Santa hats. We did one test shoot just to see how that would work out. Nobody was thrilled, but Weapon was his normal photogenic self. I was going to crop out my hand and bit, but that just seems like too much work.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-zuWCwUv7qXk/TwDj5M-utuI/AAAAAAAAAkE/y_swho_KhKE/s1600/Tommy+11-27-2012+%25281%2529.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-zuWCwUv7qXk/TwDj5M-utuI/AAAAAAAAAkE/y_swho_KhKE/s320/Tommy+11-27-2012+%25281%2529.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Tom was so far from thrilled it was funny. </div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-5HAUIt_3TN0/TwDksaSis4I/AAAAAAAAAkU/P1OPqYtUtXY/s1600/Tommy+11-27-2012+%25285%2529.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-5HAUIt_3TN0/TwDksaSis4I/AAAAAAAAAkU/P1OPqYtUtXY/s320/Tommy+11-27-2012+%25285%2529.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
Then he shook the hat off and stepped on it. That's what we think of Santa hats at our barn.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-sLASgA3DQzo/TwDlFZ1C78I/AAAAAAAAAkc/K82esnqtVlI/s1600/Tommy+11-27-2012+%25287%2529.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-sLASgA3DQzo/TwDlFZ1C78I/AAAAAAAAAkc/K82esnqtVlI/s320/Tommy+11-27-2012+%25287%2529.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: -webkit-auto;">
<br /></div>
Next year I'll have to do Santa hat pictures in the summer when everyone's slick and shiny and pretty. Clearly I couldn't be bothered to knock the mud off, but in my defense it was just supposed to be a test run. I'd have done it properly later. Really.JenLShttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10912831710402499919noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-173378090830565519.post-75756962749173789742011-12-20T21:28:00.000-08:002011-12-23T15:24:49.920-08:00There is No Death<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
It took a little doing, but I have finally figured out what does and does not work for keeping the canker hole clean and dry, and we are settling into a routine.<br />
<br />
Here's the line up:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi_FnHBCOLyYONfMiPw33HcdukfFkyAb3dAiGbfNPajgheVRhxn40OOu1u9bQJGPY2T9VdRl71oyfLkxKTWC3K-E-Q2TbK2jhkRAZucyEtK4FrbkgRfy5WkauFj6n5skw4cXGDnnjl3toRo/s1600/Tommy+11-27-2012+%25288%2529.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi_FnHBCOLyYONfMiPw33HcdukfFkyAb3dAiGbfNPajgheVRhxn40OOu1u9bQJGPY2T9VdRl71oyfLkxKTWC3K-E-Q2TbK2jhkRAZucyEtK4FrbkgRfy5WkauFj6n5skw4cXGDnnjl3toRo/s320/Tommy+11-27-2012+%25288%2529.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
And here's an overview:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgK22qD_AhU-HyOmCwVi4aKusK6en967iRoOohePhy1hsWdiBsyDBI8NPSv2Jh3OVj3AfPnfZPheI8f2Kj8SkuMymLv8FJNoOGl7L6OFhRE_Nkp1H-KLWIPSIdoPEPKI-CHY9tafRUxuGiB/s1600/Tommy+11-27-2012+%25289%2529.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgK22qD_AhU-HyOmCwVi4aKusK6en967iRoOohePhy1hsWdiBsyDBI8NPSv2Jh3OVj3AfPnfZPheI8f2Kj8SkuMymLv8FJNoOGl7L6OFhRE_Nkp1H-KLWIPSIdoPEPKI-CHY9tafRUxuGiB/s320/Tommy+11-27-2012+%25289%2529.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I'm cracking myself up here. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
We have an assortment of socket wrenches, a hand drill, hammer, bolts and washers, several hoofpicks, tweezers, Softcups, OB tampons, plastic baggies, gloves, and the medication. It's quite a bucketful of supplies.</div>
<br />
We go through a lot of bolts. The picture below shows what happens when a draft horse wears them. It makes it really difficult to get them off once he's ruined them, so I carry several different socket wrenches with me.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgZcMkHDH0e3bLCcjiQPOdhvAIyr-GthO0ryohTMJVX697_AjlTd7VdSiA90EL1TsB02ir3D5ztVarjs-yyejgScg1-0RQs7v3LK78pY69-H55U49jed_G6ov9-qv0ddliBCrDyc11yHPyC/s1600/Tommy+11-27-2012+%252811%2529.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgZcMkHDH0e3bLCcjiQPOdhvAIyr-GthO0ryohTMJVX697_AjlTd7VdSiA90EL1TsB02ir3D5ztVarjs-yyejgScg1-0RQs7v3LK78pY69-H55U49jed_G6ov9-qv0ddliBCrDyc11yHPyC/s320/Tommy+11-27-2012+%252811%2529.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
First I use a big heavy hammer to crush up the pills in a plastic sandwich baggie.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgRovbvetkbl5aagsRHrudiZsgAbOz8l8p6SmZp_SuCr5SB8LcvDhkIjnDSqBhtMmpOd7JTheOaJ-XEqkSWyjFuY1cvqQmi0sUhZ1QetsSSoETasXNNpbzbX53ROrp29PYtF3fx4C0VgOyY/s1600/Tommy+11-27-2012+%252813%2529.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgRovbvetkbl5aagsRHrudiZsgAbOz8l8p6SmZp_SuCr5SB8LcvDhkIjnDSqBhtMmpOd7JTheOaJ-XEqkSWyjFuY1cvqQmi0sUhZ1QetsSSoETasXNNpbzbX53ROrp29PYtF3fx4C0VgOyY/s320/Tommy+11-27-2012+%252813%2529.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Then I put the cream into a softcup and add the crushed pills. We had liquid in the beginning, but it did not mix well with the crushed pills, and it was just a real pain to get into the hole without spilling all over me. Plus it stunk to high heaven. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjLDskB9Ass6eNOkwx_jk1OoKifS2zYstMFzr9j0vV4Hx05OsdxpRW2utHYJ6j5j-BRk-hwvg-d3E7aPtw5S1wcAQ_Dnut5RYhVALK3tDO1oL0v_EgcrRsS6T2PPaNgBSm-80TqqGa47sXe/s1600/Tommy+11-27-2012+%252814%2529.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjLDskB9Ass6eNOkwx_jk1OoKifS2zYstMFzr9j0vV4Hx05OsdxpRW2utHYJ6j5j-BRk-hwvg-d3E7aPtw5S1wcAQ_Dnut5RYhVALK3tDO1oL0v_EgcrRsS6T2PPaNgBSm-80TqqGa47sXe/s320/Tommy+11-27-2012+%252814%2529.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Then I mix the cream and pills together. Normally I do wear gloves to do this. I've had numb fingers and a nasty taste in my mouth too many times from sticking my bare fingers into some of Tommy's medication. In this instance I've used this combination many times and know there's no side effects for me so I've become a little lazy with the gloves.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg7h-n9sdpqaUyFaMsnYvREasxm1pRUznwIein4wjIRxXIuePZc0ic4WGBYuzEoqVdwrCn4d1YHCl7FDF2GLtYI86X1N8XRndpAGQdIUB2MbsOaPmxWdhcLFU3fEj-6FLVXIzkBiWKPAlA3/s1600/Tommy+11-27-2012+%252815%2529.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg7h-n9sdpqaUyFaMsnYvREasxm1pRUznwIein4wjIRxXIuePZc0ic4WGBYuzEoqVdwrCn4d1YHCl7FDF2GLtYI86X1N8XRndpAGQdIUB2MbsOaPmxWdhcLFU3fEj-6FLVXIzkBiWKPAlA3/s320/Tommy+11-27-2012+%252815%2529.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
My mixture wasn't quite right, so I'm adding a little more cream and will mix it in.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhgoFbvR3KJutxqCxoaYopxLII-TpfBblQyiOmahP-qiDJHd82qO3lCoujdf8QPEHy7UA0U8ycOKAEDdOu8sYGh71BxMoTk0EPPsmKn-vb-BuOzrwjlKDrW_7XzieH2eyWbcLfC_XEAmFIx/s1600/Tommy+11-27-2012+%252816%2529.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhgoFbvR3KJutxqCxoaYopxLII-TpfBblQyiOmahP-qiDJHd82qO3lCoujdf8QPEHy7UA0U8ycOKAEDdOu8sYGh71BxMoTk0EPPsmKn-vb-BuOzrwjlKDrW_7XzieH2eyWbcLfC_XEAmFIx/s320/Tommy+11-27-2012+%252816%2529.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
It's baby tampon time! OB's are the perfect size to fit into the hole in Tommy's hoof. It's kind of scary isn't it??? </div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg_FiWXO0bUS-ZRkSK_Q_D4CFtxj2vFos6SuSIg3e4uhAn85lU5YRbmuNJ4KuYaEoyIV9fesvOQxZl_HRJrMindvq3kgOGKiUhkF1RE2_LHXr1xnFZo5wP9PWaTkQKinDkbcQDfVLWYcnFK/s1600/Tommy+11-27-2012+%252817%2529.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg_FiWXO0bUS-ZRkSK_Q_D4CFtxj2vFos6SuSIg3e4uhAn85lU5YRbmuNJ4KuYaEoyIV9fesvOQxZl_HRJrMindvq3kgOGKiUhkF1RE2_LHXr1xnFZo5wP9PWaTkQKinDkbcQDfVLWYcnFK/s320/Tommy+11-27-2012+%252817%2529.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Here's our work area. We use an old blue tarp, and a couple bags of shavings.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi9pK_VRpWCAe6-CxKXAv3B7AFCIUOFJFcyDMXEzWei1HguLJApbzcFvnjA0U6xhmSV7LpsxkCEG4meYGiyokiLawfQXOhS-0tG3JdfcZQ3LGdtsiaNdfTSuHHgnMrKWf2nyGjS5w1WKbJe/s1600/Tommy+11-27-2012+%252812%2529.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi9pK_VRpWCAe6-CxKXAv3B7AFCIUOFJFcyDMXEzWei1HguLJApbzcFvnjA0U6xhmSV7LpsxkCEG4meYGiyokiLawfQXOhS-0tG3JdfcZQ3LGdtsiaNdfTSuHHgnMrKWf2nyGjS5w1WKbJe/s320/Tommy+11-27-2012+%252812%2529.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: -webkit-auto;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px; text-align: left;">
I use two sawdust bales because I don't want to hold Tommy's leg up that long any more than he does. It didn't take him long to figure out that this was much easier, and we're both all about the easy route! He will occasionally put his weight down onto the bales and the entire thing just lowers. Better them than me. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px; text-align: left;">
I also do this at feeding time. He doesn't get much feed, but at least he's got a little something to occupy him. </div>
<br />
<br />
I use the drill to take off the bolts and washers. The plate was set up so that I could just remove three bolts and use the fourth as a hinge, however I've found it's easier just to take the entire thing off. That way if he pulls back and slams his hoof down I don't have to worry about the plate bending, or him stepping on it and ripping it off, or any other damage he could probably do with it. That happened quite a bit in the beginning of the hospital plate process. <br />
<br />
Tommy's been very good about the drill. Even when it rattles the plate while tightening a bolt he stands for it. I can tell you this scenario wouldn't have played out this easily had it been Weapon.<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The pinkish blob you see in the hoof is the old softcup and tampon and the mud/dirt that's creeped between the hoof and shoe. The mud you see is on the surface and has not worked past the softcup and tampon. </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
I remove them and then clean out any mud that's gotten between the plate and under the copper silicone. Then I use peroxide to disinfect it. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgH_UCzei2R58Fw3dpz3mbV8oNflXTXZr3-xQipQLL1NpEub1kNkyTE3tH9xoYaGMFWHFCUndpzNx8iexvMczvLQX-zWXoG3RB3RGBVpDZnyp_y-IKGRrdHCbdIjikP8AE1HJNKDLG5rhra/s1600/Tommy+11-27-2012+%252820%2529.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgH_UCzei2R58Fw3dpz3mbV8oNflXTXZr3-xQipQLL1NpEub1kNkyTE3tH9xoYaGMFWHFCUndpzNx8iexvMczvLQX-zWXoG3RB3RGBVpDZnyp_y-IKGRrdHCbdIjikP8AE1HJNKDLG5rhra/s320/Tommy+11-27-2012+%252820%2529.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
I take the softcup with the medication already inside it and push it up into the hole. I'm basically flipping it inside out so that the medication is against the interior of the hoof and lined by the plastic of the softcup. Then I put the OB into the hole to secure the softcup. The softcups have a pink rubber ring along the outer edge, and it will smoosh together, so I can flip on side a bit under the lip of the shoe, and the other side under the silicone.<br />
<br />
I have to admit that this photo was a surprise when I saw it because I thought I'd had all of the dirt off the silicone. Since viewing this, I've since added a handheld LED light to my equipment.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjRxTMTA3y2QD4Y9NamF_Ssir3xQLnbeyHOT5pj8rPnhHpzh__Bqa2KzTrFLVoR7_M6bdkd-W2hFVi9aH4kbMa5tUSkv4_RD_BcHooN1Z8J-wyI-L9kJ-luNuVQa6OBUpdqTaYn0Axrn33Q/s1600/Tommy+11-27-2012+%252821%2529.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjRxTMTA3y2QD4Y9NamF_Ssir3xQLnbeyHOT5pj8rPnhHpzh__Bqa2KzTrFLVoR7_M6bdkd-W2hFVi9aH4kbMa5tUSkv4_RD_BcHooN1Z8J-wyI-L9kJ-luNuVQa6OBUpdqTaYn0Axrn33Q/s320/Tommy+11-27-2012+%252821%2529.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
I try to keep my supplies close, but it never seems to be quite close enough. I especially hate it when I drop a bolt and have to search for it.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjfcU7fuwYjQp78n3i63-N7Y0kA6FutVUF4QDqeHnWKuv43KKhdwhSeMMFIwYhVN_OP95QIikyRh8TAJNpXMtDHp67qHppT2xMmdhI4ZgY7vu4EXJMTa-xxAsQy5AAeCsh0Vh_gtHhpm8oh/s1600/Tommy+11-27-2012+%252823%2529.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjfcU7fuwYjQp78n3i63-N7Y0kA6FutVUF4QDqeHnWKuv43KKhdwhSeMMFIwYhVN_OP95QIikyRh8TAJNpXMtDHp67qHppT2xMmdhI4ZgY7vu4EXJMTa-xxAsQy5AAeCsh0Vh_gtHhpm8oh/s320/Tommy+11-27-2012+%252823%2529.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
Once everything's been put in place and I'm happy with it, I slap the hospital plate back on and start the bolts. Then I use the drill to tighten everything up.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiuH6iE3PnQ_E6QBPs5wGKLgd5PDfYAo8Rl5jc2OVFjpbWhb73OBFWkOwkkff52i6leWXx1Ul-gQS-MgUBvcNWGJNXuWjmZYWbdz1n68m8xowFaj0fT-R9NukviACMX6BekRvtOoEqAopXf/s1600/Tommy+11-27-2012+%252826%2529.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiuH6iE3PnQ_E6QBPs5wGKLgd5PDfYAo8Rl5jc2OVFjpbWhb73OBFWkOwkkff52i6leWXx1Ul-gQS-MgUBvcNWGJNXuWjmZYWbdz1n68m8xowFaj0fT-R9NukviACMX6BekRvtOoEqAopXf/s320/Tommy+11-27-2012+%252826%2529.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I've tried plastic baggies, saran wrap, and condoms, but the softcups and OBs seem to work the best. If it's rainy and wet the tampon is sometimes soaked through, but as long as he's in the stall or in the feed lot I've not yet had problems keeping the interior of the hole clean/dry. It's not a solution for more than a little bit of mud, and absolutely no water deep enough to cover the hoof. I see another winter spent primarily in the barn and feed lot for Tommy. Luckily Tommy doesn't seem to care if he's there...his hay is closer that way!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I'd like to breathe a big sigh of relief here, but we still have the entire winter ahead of us. So I'll just give a tiny sigh and hope that the snow and ice don't throw us back to the drawing board.</div>
<br />
<br />

<br /></div>
<div>
All the work Mark did to create those shoes and plate, and it's not working. It's not "kinda" not working. There's not a little bit of dirt inside the plate. It's REALLY not working. There was mud packed into the hole, in the access area, and under some of the blue silicone.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Awesome. Lots of rain of course. While the pasture wasn't standing in mud everywhere there was definately mud around the main gate, water trough, hay rack, and the entry to the run in shed. I cleaned it out and medicated it again. I really packed the hole with the gauze this time to see if it made a difference.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Nope.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
So Tommy went straight from the horse pasture into a stall that opens onto an empty concrete feed lot. It's not ideal for the ringbone by a long shot, but neither is not being able to clear out the Canker. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I have another gripe too.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
This hospital pad is a PAIN to get off and on. I thought it would be No Problem. Tommy's waaaay used to me working with his hooves. This one in particular, and I thought it would be a simple matter of propping his hoof on my knee the way we used to do and taking off the plate. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Nope.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
It's way more difficult. Plus Tommy keeps shearing down the bolts so the socket wrench won't grab them. And two of the four bolt threads in his $200 custom shoes are stripped. So I can hardly get them in OR out.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I can't imagine having to deal with this all winter. We haven't even had any sleet, snow, or <i>really </i>cold weather yet.</div>JenLShttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10912831710402499919noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-173378090830565519.post-16182540291327125542011-11-18T17:56:00.001-08:002011-11-18T19:23:29.006-08:00Fat Feet Shoes<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I swear, if I was a draft horse farrier that's what I'd call my business. Fat Feet Shoes. I'd have a big horse trailer full of shoeing stuff. And a random dog getting into my stuff.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiwsE-72QHUp_UQ7X7pxvfXa7qlTdTUbL8TZOP35nYbWbyrpN8LXLzVvlyBaG1Xldkdxvyb58ZNrrDhnxONe8Gj1oAOymwrSC2CwWPz-qGK0h2r-HMKE2OgP9INtq42s7qy6u-LcJW5zYo7/s1600/DSCN3495.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiwsE-72QHUp_UQ7X7pxvfXa7qlTdTUbL8TZOP35nYbWbyrpN8LXLzVvlyBaG1Xldkdxvyb58ZNrrDhnxONe8Gj1oAOymwrSC2CwWPz-qGK0h2r-HMKE2OgP9INtq42s7qy6u-LcJW5zYo7/s320/DSCN3495.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: left;">
I would also have a Chief Horse Holder.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
I would probably not be able to make shoes like this though because I'd end up hammering my hand.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiFZ_j6O91tadZY9EdxIvkZLbMgYfilnPkIvwTMpJ0KTNV4hcrsPhIThJgW-FAwKAoEdhZuz25N1UmPe4ARja5Rr3NoqJNZvWBmastZSrpIf0pwnqsj1OFM8TUlUJN2XsFd_SW60U3Sy72W/s1600/DSCN3524.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiFZ_j6O91tadZY9EdxIvkZLbMgYfilnPkIvwTMpJ0KTNV4hcrsPhIThJgW-FAwKAoEdhZuz25N1UmPe4ARja5Rr3NoqJNZvWBmastZSrpIf0pwnqsj1OFM8TUlUJN2XsFd_SW60U3Sy72W/s320/DSCN3524.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
See how glowing hot they are? I wish the red would have shown up better in the photos. This was my first experience with hot shoeing. I was way impressed. Tommy's shoe started out as a big metal bar.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Mark turned them into this:</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Notice the size? That's not my 10 year old son holding the shoe. Yea, those fit big big boys!<br />
<br />
Here's Tommy wearing his custom shoe. Sorry for the off center picture. I was holding his hoof and taking photos at the same time. You can see the packing in the hole on the left. It's blending in to the hoof, so a bit difficult to see.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhq_Tpt43Wj02NhvuJESRFpG1uMWl0WDdXBPyD1NCJzg3byyOKc1fR88CfH4fHKMiGZ3I2lijyn4nPbh7z9fMrCa0WqaaipKHSJHwOeHSH5QHMylJSOIPtfDH-nAycis-OBUR6j6aIp80iE/s1600/DSCN3504.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhq_Tpt43Wj02NhvuJESRFpG1uMWl0WDdXBPyD1NCJzg3byyOKc1fR88CfH4fHKMiGZ3I2lijyn4nPbh7z9fMrCa0WqaaipKHSJHwOeHSH5QHMylJSOIPtfDH-nAycis-OBUR6j6aIp80iE/s320/DSCN3504.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Then he put on the hospital plate. It's a big piece of aluminum.</div>

<br />
Four bolts hold it in place. I unbolt three of them, and the fourth acts as a hinge.<br />
<br />

<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Here's the finished shoe, minus the hospital plate. You can see the opening between the bar and the hoof in these photos. Previously his leather pad was between the hoof and the shoe, so there were no gaps.</div>

In this photo you can see the last remnant of the original hole. It's behind the last nail almost to the rear corner of his hoof. So if anyone is paying attention to the timeframe that was a growth period of 7 1/2 months. I hope that I'm able to successfully manage this canker site with the hospital plate on; because if I'm not then Dr. A is going to drill through the top of the hoof so I can medicate down instead of up. That means all things being equal I'll have another 7 1/2 months before that hole is fully grown out.<br />
<br />

<br />
Then it was time to inject the copper silicone into the space between the hoof and the plate. I may be calling that by the incorrect name. I know it was blue because it had copper in it. This will help keep any thrush from infecting the frog area, and will keep out mud and dirt.<br />

Once it firmed up, he opened up the plate to remove the packing from the hole. The blue is now soft, but firmly in place. The packing was there to keep the silicone from filling in the hole.</div>

<br />
And don't we have a great vet and farrier? Dr. A and Mark never whine about having their pictures taken, or roll their eyes, or make little snide comments. And they hold the hoof and pose when needed. Thanks guys; you're the best!</div>JenLShttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10912831710402499919noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-173378090830565519.post-10611074814597233952011-11-10T17:57:00.001-08:002011-11-10T18:36:00.227-08:00It's X-Ray Tuesday!<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
It was X-Ray Tuesday this week. Tommy's getting to be an old pro at this. He does such a good job. He steps right on the blocks. First one foot...</div>

<br />
We've been working on the abscess from hell since July 2010. I went to look at a trail horse, but ended up taking Tommy home on trial. He had an abscess, but I went ahead and bought him anyways because I'd only had NORMAL abscess experiences prior to this. We pulled shoes and found a major abscess:<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
We ended up having to resection the hoof. By "we" I mean Dr. Alexander at East River Equine Hospital.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
You can't see it from the above photo, but the interior was open to the coffin bone. Xrays revealed ring bone and side bone in both front legs, and a puncture wound in the coffin bone. Long story short, he did not appear to be rideable. I am a stubborn cuss though, and I had it in my head he was fixable. So I ignored the worst parts and focused on what I could fix.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Tom was on stall rest for months. He had daily soakings and medications for months, and then we finally got to the point where we could cover the sole with a pad and secure it with a shoe. Then I only had every other day treatments!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
It was a long, long road with lots of money in several vets, horse hospitals, farriers, antibiotics, pain killers, medications, vetwrap, diapers, and supplements. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
In August we were almost home free. The hoof was almost entirely grown out. The hole was mostly filled in, but it was smooshy - like a big soft marshmallow. The next shoeing would see if complete. </div>

I was like a baseball player who'd just rounded third, heading for home and already celebrating my home run.<br />
<br />
Then in mid October Tommy came up dead lame. Dr. A came out the very next day. The abscess had come out the top of the heel, so he had another dose of antibiotics and was poulticed and buted and I treated it as a normal abscess. Tommy was walking better within a week.<br />
<br />
Our farrier appointment had gotten pushed back a few weeks due to a scheduling conflict, but yesterday was the big day. When he pulled the shoe we saw that the original abscess site had been infected as well. Quite a bit of the new tissue was eaten up by the infection.<br />
<br />

<br />
I know you can't really judge the depth, but the hole is 1/2 - 1" deep, and in addition to that it now has a channel eaten out from the hole through to the frog. That piece of hoof between the hole and the frog is hollow underneath. <br />

<br />
Luckily for me my awesome new-ish farrier was meeting with Dr. A today and Tommy was going to be one of the topics. I did a <a href="http://www.valleyvet.com/ct_detail.html?pgguid=d649b27a-bcfa-4e53-a9e2-a1403b868763">Clean Trax</a> soak today and booted up with <a href="http://www.easycareinc.com/our_boots/easyboot_rx/easyboot_rx.aspx">Easy Boot RX</a> again. I wish I'd bought more Clean Trax at QH Congress while it was on sale for $10 each! I'll be doing another soak or two in the next week. <br />
<br />
My plan for Monday morning is to give Dr. A at East River Equine Hospital a call and see if he can get Tommy in this week. Maybe I'm gun shy after dealing with it so long, but this looks really bad. If we have to do another resection I don't want to wait on it. At this point I wouldn't be surprised if I came out one day and his leg had just plain fallen off. <br />
<br />
Fingers crossed and curb chain jingles for Tommy.<br />

Tommy is having his shoes pulled again so we can see what his left hoof is looking like. The last farrier appointment showed more growth, but the bottom of the hoof where the hole is was like pushing on a marshmallow. Strange in a freaky that's not supposed to happen sort of way. Fingers crossed for Friday. I can't wait!<div><br />

I love having a goal. I love that I feel like I <i>can </i>have a goal. I'm keeping it real. We're not going to go ride the <a href="http://www.teviscup.org/">Tevis Cup</a> next year;<br />
<br />
<br />
<div style="font: normal normal normal 12px/normal Helvetica; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px; text-align: center;"><img alt="DuncanCougarRock2009.jpg" src="webkit-fake-url://1AE25F3F-1D5D-4343-9799-63A15BFBC6FB/DuncanCougarRock2009.jpg" /></div><br />
<br />
But look what I found: <a href="https://www.actha.us/home">American Competitive Trail Horse Assoc.</a> You know who could do this?<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiqYM4JRAqMlIttaVbM_hXAw3tGmCmvIzN1ODkVT1bvHb7XiYtJxqTzWGnn73Fq-9uBAJx7sUhy9P5n1G2lrLSGljlHEXQ9OdbEIVjogOr5UvnV5vuTvtn_L_KNeGd1CPsor0KdqnEsdBBd/s1600/DSCN3253.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiqYM4JRAqMlIttaVbM_hXAw3tGmCmvIzN1ODkVT1bvHb7XiYtJxqTzWGnn73Fq-9uBAJx7sUhy9P5n1G2lrLSGljlHEXQ9OdbEIVjogOr5UvnV5vuTvtn_L_KNeGd1CPsor0KdqnEsdBBd/s320/DSCN3253.JPG" width="211" /></a></div><br />
There is a ride on October 22nd and 23rd at <a href="http://www.wallacehorsefarms.com/">Wallace Horse Farm</a> in Martinsville Indiana which is about an hour and a half from me. It looks like it's a 6 or 7 mile trail with the about the same number of obstacles, with a ride length of about 2 hours. <br />
<br />
I'm intrigued.<br />
<br />
I checked out the list of possible <a href="https://www.actha.us/index.php?option=com_association&view=guest&area=obstacles&task=view_list">obstacles</a> - there are quite a few of them!<br />
<br />
Some things we couldn't do (jumping, cantering circles, etc.) but I think we could do a lot of them with some practice. I'm not sure how easily I'd be able to pick something up from him. Tommy's so tall I may need a grabber:<br />
<br />
<br />
<div style="font: normal normal normal 12px/normal Helvetica; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px; text-align: center;"><img alt="1890.jpg" src="webkit-fake-url://9265D9A1-FB20-47D7-B3AD-ACF8B6C41E8C/1890.jpg" /></div><br />
<br />
Best of all my little co-pilot could come along! <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEglcOTIJx_mjC-EzPfUKBpfzcNRnTXCLqS89YhPq3mlxfOq3z6PfK5DAZHP30irVKaBVcqqh3jFg6rll5BcrqJftMJOVqpRXCjHXltAEGByPL9hsFuc4MaOzo0gTtAIGGMk1Dr68gmeScfv/s1600/DSCN3254.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEglcOTIJx_mjC-EzPfUKBpfzcNRnTXCLqS89YhPq3mlxfOq3z6PfK5DAZHP30irVKaBVcqqh3jFg6rll5BcrqJftMJOVqpRXCjHXltAEGByPL9hsFuc4MaOzo0gTtAIGGMk1Dr68gmeScfv/s320/DSCN3254.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><br />
<br />
I sent an email to the ride organizer last week to see if we'd have to ride both days (No) and if we'd be able to haul in the morning of the ride instead of camping (Yes). Because I'm not a camper. At least I'm not camping in a tent in October in Ohio. I might be a camper if I had this:<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;"></div><div style="font: 12.0px Helvetica; margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px;"><img alt="cimnew.jpg" src="webkit-fake-url://4FBE31E2-6F8C-4BD2-83CD-F8348E9F8865/cimnew.jpg" /></div><br />
<br />
Nothing says I'm not roughing it quite like a trailer with living quarters. That looks big enough for Tom and I! <br />
<br />
I'm excited about this possibility! The only possible conflict could be the boys soccer tournaments. Would I be a bad Mom if I hope they don't win the first round???JenLShttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10912831710402499919noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-173378090830565519.post-58643091231274937992011-10-12T17:56:00.000-07:002011-10-12T17:56:00.095-07:00Saddle Up for the Cure Photos<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">I haven't seen the official photographer's photos yet, but I have all of mine uploaded now and wanted to share them with you.
